I received this as a gift, thank goodness. I would regret my purchase otherwise. The main problem with the tablet is it shoddy construction. The Pen works alright, but the included mouse is a study in frustration. When I single-click the left mouse button, the mouse double-clicks quite often. Although it might work most of the day with an unintended double-click several times an hour, most often it double-clicks several times a minute. I usually work in Adobe Illustrator and use the mouse to select or draw objects. Double-clicking an object sends you into Isolation Mode unless you turn off that behavior in the program's preferences. Deleting an email will result in unintentionally deleting a second email when the mouse double-clicks.
The Pen works as intended and is a boon to drawing or painting in Illustrator, Photoshop, or Painter, among others.
My advice is to set the mouse aside. I purchases a Microsoft Comfort Mouse 4500 and it works on the glossy black surface of the tablet. It single-clicks when I single-click, as I had expected of the Wacom mouse.

Wacom Intuos4 Large Pen Tablet I received this item from Amazon in late October, having had previously limited experience on a pen tablet, but having seen them in action. My intent was to produce finer control with Photoshop tools and layers, not concerned about how fast I could produce an image. I chose the large tablet, rather than a smaller one, thinking the larger area would allow better resolution and finer image edge control, and that seems to work well for my needs. My computer is a 24 inch iMac Intel Core Duo. My primary software is Nikon Capture NX2 for initial processing of raw images from a full frame Nikon camera, then fine tune or create new images in Photoshop CS-4, using multiple layers.
The package included the tablet, multi-function pen and mouse, driver software for the computer, stand for the pen, easy start instruction book, and full instructions on .pdf file. The easy start instructions were clear and allowed me to quickly set up my computer. The tablet plugs into the USB 2 port and was immediately up and running with no issues once the software was installed. The tablet can be set up for right or left handed use. Mine is for right handed use, control panel on the left, easily accessed with my left hand, while I use the pen in my right.
Being both a recently purchased device, and a relatively new user, I am still exploring the way the tablet and pen operate. The mouse operates the same as my Mac's mouse as long as it is placed on the tablet. The WACOM mouse is programmable with additional buttons beyond the OEM mouse, so the user can determine extra functions according to personal needs.
I have focused primarily on use of the pen. With practice, I have gained control well beyond the mouse, which was my only input pointing and image control device for photography until this purchase. I have gained my objective in now having much finer control over resolution of my images and am excited to continue exploring how this tablet will give me ever better output.
The greatest difficulty so far is getting clear instructions from the .pdf file of the full manual. The device is fairly intuitive but without understanding the use of the pen pressure to control brush sizes in Photoshop, it was not initially clear. The manual does give good descriptions of how to adapt the tablet controls, pen and mouse to the user's choices. The user may need to experiment for a while to get the full benefit of using a pen and tablet over mouse input but once that understanding is reached, the beauty of using a pen and tablet should pay off with much better images, as those seen in some of the professionally oriented digital image magazines and other sources of image examples from Photoshop experts.
For those with a sophisticated level using Photoshop or other highly creative software, I recommend this device. For the novice image processing user, I suggest waiting until one has reached a fuller understanding and skill level before purchase of this type of device.
